CopperStar was founded in 1998 as an exhibition senior corps in Phoenix, Arizona, when alumni and other drum corps enthusiasts met to relive some of the best times in their lives. Members of the senior corps originally marched in several drum corps from coast to coast in the United States and Canada.

CopperStar launched a junior corps project in the summer of 2000. Several local drum corps veterans met over the summer to plan Arizona's first competitive drum corps in seven years. Word of mouth spread quickly, and the corps was able to compile a list of potential members from all over Arizona and New Mexico.

CopperStar joined DCI-Pacific in December of 2000, and the corps held its first rehearsal camp in January of 2001. The corps was an exhibition group in 2001, but the departure of director Robert Taylor, funding problems, and low membership delayed the planned entry into 2002 DCI competition. The corps was inactive in 2002.
