The Grey Ghost drum and bugle corps was originally formed in the in the fall of 1971 as the Drumadiers and sponsored by the Wampsville Fire Department.

Initially, the corps was strictly made up of only a drumline, changing their name to the Grey Ghost in 1973. The following year, bugles were added in 1974 as they marched 9 bugles in 1975 and that same year, separated from the fire department and became independent, marching 22 bugles in 1976 and performed in parades throughout upstate New York.

In 1977, the Grey Ghost took to field competition in the Penn-York “Class B” circuit, placing 2nd and competed for the first time in the New York State championships, finishing in 11th position. By then, the corps had grown to 25 bugles along with 3 snares, 2 triple tenors and 4 bass drummers.
