General Putnam's Men drum and bugle corps was founded in the spring of 1975 by Dr. Brice R. Musser and established in Ottawa, which is in Putnam County.
The county and corps were named after Revolutionary War General, Israel Putnam. Going with that theme and with the approach of the bicentennial, the corps uniforms were based on colonial costumes; knickers and vests with tri-corner hats. In the beginning, the corps took boys with little or no training and completely taught them. The corps’ first year was spent as a parade unit and in 1976, they began participating in “Class A” competition. That year, as members of the Great Lakes circuit, placed 7th in the preliminary round.
The following season, the Putnam’s Men made their first appearance in the 1977 US Open “Class A” prelims, finishing in 20th position and expanded their tour to include the 1978 American International Open (AIO), where they placed 21st and 18th in the US Open, they year girls were added to the corps. The General Putnam’s Men traveled and competed primarily in Ohio, Michigan and Ontario. In 1979, the corps made “Class A” finals in the US Open, placing 5th along with a 7th place finish in the AIO finals. In 1980, the group toured to New York state to compete in Drum Corps East, where they placed 21st in the “Open Class” prelims on their way to a 4th place finish in the US Open finals, their highest ranking ever in the contest and 3rd position in the Key to the Sea “Class A” finals. The corps made its only appearance in the 1981 DCI championship week, placing 12th in the “Class A” preliminaries.
In the spring of 1982, due to lack of community support and financial considerations, the director and staff made the difficult decision to disband.
