The 49ers drum and bugle corps was formed initially as a competitive color guard in 1963 and was sponsored by the Whiteman Davidson AL Post 49 of Tilton.
The corps was originally founded as an “All Age” corps in 1961 and a Parent Booster Club, along with members of the senior group, organized the junior corps in 1963. They were members of the New Hampshire and All American circuits and entered the field of competition in 1966. They participated in the American Legion National championships in 1966, placing 47th and 51st in 1967.
The 49ers competed regionally over the next three seasons before disbanding in 1971.
