The Ballantine Brewers, formed in 1963, was organized by World Hall of Famer Mickey Petrone and consisted largely of graduates from both the Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights of Newark and the St. Vincent’s Cadets of Bayonne.
The corps was sponsored by the Irvington VFW Post 9393 and the P. Ballantine and Sons Beer company. Their colors were black, red, and white. Other key individuals in the administration included Ed Wexner and George Hutchinson. Another World Hall of Famer, Joe Genero, was the brass arranger and instructor.
They made their first public appearance in May 1963 in the Loyalty Day Parade held at Asbury Park and entered the field of competition that summer. In 1964, the Brewers participated in a Carnegie Hall concert in May and competed at the infamous National Dream contest, placing 4th.
The corps existed only two years, disbanding in 1965.
