The Newark State School for the Handicapped of Newark, NY, sponsored a drum and bugle corps of approximately 20 physically and mentally handicapped members who played their hearts out in parades and was a delight for viewers who knew the constraints of these fine performers. The Newark State School for the Handicapped Drum and Bugle Corps was headed by music instructor Rich DeCola originally from The Newark Spartans Sr. Competition Drum Corps of Newark, N.Y. headed by his father from the late 40s to early '60s. What a magnificent effort on the part of Rich DeCola who did all of his instructing at Newark State Hospital ...gratis. Rich DeCola is well known for his musical arrangements in 1969, 70, and 71 for the Boston Crusaders with his iconic and world-renowned, renditions of Conquest from (Captain from Castile), Battle Hymn of the Republic, Marines Hymn, Man Of La Mancha, and a very stirring version of Yankee Doodle and all other arrangements in those years.
