The Anderson American Legion (AL) Post 14 drum and bugle corps was formed and sponsored by the William Augustus Hudgens AL Post in January 1947.  It’s interesting to note that 10 years previous, there was a plan to start a drum and bugle corps in 1937 but there was not enough interest and the proposal didn’t materialize.

In 1947, they performed locally as they fundraised to purchase equipment And uniforms. In one such event, they dressed up as clowns in the Santa Claus parade. The following two seasons saw the corps compete at the SC AL state championships, finishing as bridesmaids and went on to be crowned the 1950 state championships, their only state win in their history. The corps went on to participate at the American Legion Nationals held in Los Angeles that year.

In 1951, the Anderson Legion returned to their familiar bridesmaid ranking at the state convention, opting not to compete the following season but did remain active. The corps continued its local community events in 1953 and participated in the American Legion Nationals’ parade held in Washington, DC. From 1955 to 1960, the corps competed on and off at the annual state convention championships, placing 2nd and 3rd over the years.

The corps remained active in 1961, although they opted to not compete at the state convention that year. In 1962, the Anderson Post decided to continue offering a competitive path for their membership by merging into the Greenville Rebeleers organization.
