The Apple Arrows drum and bugle corps was formed in 1959 and sponsored by the Gittens Leidel American Legion Post 595 of La Crescent, just across the river from La Crosse.

William Dumond served as the corps director from its inception to 1963. In 1960, the Apple Arrows performed as an exhibition unit at the Minnesota AL State convention at Moorhead, returning the following season as a competitive corps, finishing in 5th position in St. Paul.

In July 1962, finished second at the Minnesota State AL championships in Duluth. The following season, the corps competed in the parade division of the State Legion. The Apple Arrows would field a competitive corps for the 1963 season as members of the Badgerland Association. Robert McLaughlin, Edward Olsen and Earl Good took over the direction of the corps in 1964, as the corps participated in competitive parades.

In 1965, the La Crescent Legion announced its post colors would be carried by the newly formed Blue Stars Color guard to form the Blue Stars. Consequently, the Apple Arrows reorganized as the Blue Star Cadets, feeder corps to the Blue Stars.
