Anaheim; Buena Park, CA United States
Founded: 1998

The Impulse drum & bugle corps was founded in the fall of 1998 by Velvet Knight Alumni who desired to reorganize the Velvet Knights after its demise the year prior.
The original intent was to field a corps that would offer an irreverent fun-filled performance reminiscent of Velvet Knights and Bridgemen. Thus, the use the exclamation point as a logo and the yellow and black uniforms. The spirit and nature of their beloved Velvet Knights inspired the name.
Impulse's first competitive season was in 1999. The corps toured locally in California performing in a total of 5 competitions. The charter membership totaled 54 members. In 2000, the corps toured to the Pacific Northwest and as far east as Wyoming and Colorado, competing in the prestigious “Drums Along the Rockies”, placing 2nd in their division.
In 2001, the corps placed 4th in the Southern California (So Cal) “Division II” Open and traveled East to compete in the Canadian & Coast Guard Open regional prelims, finishing 9th & 7th respectively, before making its first appearance in the DCI “Division II” championship preliminary round, where they placed 9th. The following season, Impulse placed 4th in the 2002 Pacific Open and returned East, earning a finalist ranking in the Canadian Open and placing 10th & 12th in the Coast Guard Open and DCI “Division II” prelims.
The corps traveled South for the 2003 season, participating in the DCI Chattanooga & Valdosta “Division II” regionals, finishing 5th & 3rd respectively on their way to a finalist position in the DCI “Division II” championships, placing 8th. The corps relocated from Anaheim to Buena Park in 2004 and after a 4th place finish in the So Cal contest and improved to a 6th place finish in both the DCI “Division II” & “Grand Finals” championships. In 2005, Impulse placed 3rd in the So Cal tournament and repeated their 6th place finishes in the DCI finals.
In 2006, the corps fielding fewer than 60 members, moved to “Division III”, winning the So Cal title, placed 2nd in the Great Lakes Open regionals and was crowned the 2006 DCI “Division III” champions. The following year saw the corps finish 3rd in the 2007 So Cal “Division III” Classic, 7th in the DCI Preview regionals & with the DCI held in their home state, just down the road from Buena Park managed a 6th-place finish in the finals. After 4th place finishes in both the 2008 So Cal & California (CA) State Open contests, the corps placed 18th in the newly formed “Open Class” of the DCI championships.
From 2009 to 2015, Impulse opted to remain competitive as a DCI “Open Class” member in local DCI sanctioned competitions, placing 5th in the CA State Open & participated annually in the So Cal Open championships, finishing 4th (2010-2013), 5th (2014), 6th (2015-2017). In 2016, the corps made its first appearance in the DCI championships since 2007, with a 14th position in the 2016 DCI “Open Class” prelims & a 36th place finish in the “World Class” prelims and 15th (Open Class) & 39th (World Class) place finishes in the 2017 DCI preliminaries.
For the 2018 and 2019 seasons, the corps returned to regional competition, placing 8th in the Pacific & So Cal contests both years and traveled to Utah & Colorado. until the pandemic in 2020. From 2022 to 2025, Impulse exhibited steady improvement in So Cal competition, placing 7th (2022), 4th (2023) & 3rd (2024 & 2025).
