The Cardinals drum and bugle corps was first organized in the fall of 1969 as a product of the extensive youth program of the church of the Precious Blood in Scarborough. The founders of the corps were Jim Towie, longtime corps director, and Father Dugo.
They first appeared in competition in the “Junior Novice” division at the 1970 Canadian and Provincial championships, fielding a corps of 22 members. They finished in 4th position at both contests. In 1971, the corps won both the Canadian and Provincial “Class C” championships with 50 members. In 1972, the corps moved up to the “Class B” competitive division, participating at the Bell Canada (4th), the Western Ontario (7th), the Drum Corps Canada (15th) and the Canadian Nationals (7th - prelims).
The 1973 season saw the corps continue to improve with 5th place finishes at the Junior B International and Western Ontario championships along with a 4th place at the Canadian Nationals “Class B” prelims. In the fall of 1973, Majorettes corps of Precious Blood fused into the Cardinals, increasing the membership to over 100 members by 1974.
From 1974 to 1978, the Cardinals of Precious Blood, enjoyed great success, participating at several regionals as finalists, including the American International Open (AIO) “Class A” (1974 and 1976), the AIO “Open Class” (1977 and 1978), the US Open “Class A” (1976 and were crowned 1977 champions), the Canadian Capital Open (1976), the 1974 Key to the Sea “Class A” prelims and the Canadian Nationals “Class B” (1974 and 1975) and “Class A” (1976 to 1978).
After the 1978 season, the corps went inactive and reorganized in 1982, when they converted their feeder corps back to the Cardinals, no longer under the sponsorship of the Precious Blood church. They performed at the DCI championships in 1982 before reverting to an exhibition and parade corps in 1983. They also had the distinction of appearing in the movie "The Terry Fox Story" that same year. The corps returned to the field of competition in 1984, placing 6th at the Canadian Nationals “Class B” prelims, finishing 7th in the prelims of the 1985 DCI Canada “Class A/60” prelims and 5th at the Canadian “Class B”. The following year, the Cardinals earned a finalist spot at the 1986 “Class B” Canadian Nationals.
From 1987 through to 1995, the Cardinals were a perennial competitor at the DCI championships, participating the first two years in the “Class A/60” prelims (1987 and 1988) and graduated to the “Class A / Division II” prelims (1989 to 1995) for the remainder of their existence. Along the way, they also participated at DCI Canada, DCI East, DCI North, the North American Open, the US Open, finalist in 1994 and Drum Corps East, finalist in 1993 and 1994. Locally, they competed in the “Class A” division at the Canadian Nationals, placing as high as 2nd in 1994.
In 1996, the Cardinals merged with the Oakland Crusaders to form Northshore of Toronto.
