The Free Statesmen drum and bugle corps was formed in August of 1967 and led by corps director James Macfarlane.

After their inaugural seasons of parades and exhibitions, the corps entered the field of competition in 1969 as the very first senior competitor in western Maryland and perennial Red Carpet Association (RCA) member. From 1969 to 1974 the Cumberland unit placed 9th in 1969, 10th in 1971, 11th in 1974, 12th in 1972 & 1973 and 13th in 1970 in RCA championships.

One of the highlights of the corps occurred in 1972 season when the infamous Ralph Silverbrand and Chuck Bishop, former drum majors with the Hawthorne Caballeros were added to the corps instructional staff. In 1975, under their new name, the Confederate Statesmen, competed in their one and only RCA circuit contest before reorganizing as a parade unit for the balance of that season.

They disbanded in 1976 and returned back to the former Blue Angels senior parade corps, originated 20 years prior.
