The Black Knights drum and bugle corps was formed in 1959 and sponsored by the Salamanca Elks Lodge No. 1025, representing Southwestern New York state.
The corps participated in several local parades in 1960 and were members of the NY-Penn circuit throughout their existence, entering the field of competition in 1961. In 1962, they appeared before a national television audience on August 18th when they gave an exhibition between the halves at the "Festival of Football" in Cleveland. In 1963, the corps participated in several parades and competed regionally and continued field competition in 1964 before returning to parade status in 1965.
In the fall of 1965, the Black Knights merged with the Cornplanters of Warren to form the Interstate Cavaliers.
