The Crusaders drum and bugle corps was founded in the fall of 1958 under the leadership of Robert Hoehn and was sponsored by the J. Frank Cavanaugh American Legion (AL) Post 67 of Miami.

The corps competed in the Florida state championships, placing 2nd and participated in the 1959 AL Nationals where they finished in 16th position in the preliminary round. They Miami Crusaders traveled to Cuba in 1959 for the parade celebrating Veinte-Seis de Julio (July 26). Fidel Castro's revolution was called the Veinte-Seis de Julio movement. Paul Girard recalls "The parade was a mile long, but because of the enthusiasm of the crowd, we were not fatigued at the end and we were ready to do it again, if asked."

The following season saw the corps in the 1960 state convention once again under new sponsorship , under the direction of Sergeant John Cokker from the Miami Dade Metro Safety Department. Also known as the “Greater Miami Crusaders”, the corps remained active over the next two years with sheriff Tom Kelly as corps director.

They disbanded in 1963.
