Burlington, MA United States
Founded: 1965
The Citations drum & bugle corps was formed in the fall of 1965 under the direction of Robert C. O’Neil.
The corps used green uniforms with black pants and black berets in their first years, performing as a parade corps in 1966. The following season saw the corps enter the field of competition as members of the Mayflower and participated at the 1968 Internationals circuit championships, placing 3rd in the “Class C” division. That year, they Citations took to the field of competition with a new uniform consisting of white tops with red pants with shakos.
In 1969, the corps qualified in the Mayflower “Class C” finals, finishing 5th and remained competitive within the circuit over the next 3 years, winning the 1971 Yankee “Class C” circuit championships. The corps lost their leader, Bob O’Neil, who passed away suddenly in November of 1970. The Citations seeded in the 1973 “Class B” circuit finalist, placing 5th. In 1974, they competed at the
National level for the first time, participating at the World Open “Class B” preliminaries, where they finished 19th and moved up to a 4th position in the Mayflower finals.
In 1975, the corps returned to the World Open “Class B” prelims, placing 24th and continued as a Mayflower “Class B” finalist that year and in 1976, finishing 4th, their last appearance in the circuit. The following year, the Burlington unit joined the Eastern Massachusetts (E Mass) circuit, competing within the “Class B” division and resumed competition at the 1978 World Open “Class B” prelims, where they finished in 30th position closing out the season at the “Battle of Champions”, where they placed
11th in “Class B” action.
From 1979 to 1984, the Citations participated at several other “Class A” championships including the American International Open (1979 - 14th - prelims, 1980 - 22nd - prelims, 1983 - 8th - finals,
1984 - 9th - finals); the Key to the Sea Invitational (1983 - 10th - finals, 1979 - 12th - prelims); the US Open (1983 - 17th - prelims); DCI Midwest (1984 - 9th) and the World Open “Class B”
prelims (1979 - 19th - prelims, 1980 - 13th - prelims). In 1979, they competed at the Northeast circuit championships, placing 9th.
As recurring members of the E Mass circuit, the corps participated in the “Class A2” division from 1980 to 1982, the latter finishing in 2nd position and moved up to the “Class A” division from 1983 to 1986, where they placed between 2nd and 3rd position for the exception of 1985, when they won the title. In 1981, the corps began competing at the DCI “Class A” preliminaries, placing 33rd and 18th in 1982. They returned to the 1985 DCI “Class A/60” prelims, finishing 8th and qualified for the 1986 “Class A/60” finals, placing 6th.
From 1987 to 1991, the Citations went inactive primarily due to a decline in membership but reorganized in the fall of 1991, returning to the field of competition once again as members of the E Mass circuit, winning the 1992 “Class C” title and moving up to the “Class B” division over the next two years. From 1995 to 1999, the corps also returned to DCI championship contests, where they ranked between 30th (1995) to 9th (1999) in the prelims. During that same span, they won the 1995 E Mass “Class B” title and were crowned the 1998 “Class A” champions. In 2000 and 2001, the corps reverted back to parade status, rebuilding as a competitive unit, participating at the DCI "Division III" prelims from 2002 to 2007, qualifying in the 2006 DCI "Division III" Semifinals. In 2008, the Citations appeared in the DCI "Open Class" the new Division II/III classification, placing 6th in the finals and topped off what would eventually be their last season as a 3rd place 2009 Bronze "Open Class" medalist. The also won the "Top Guard" award in both 2008 and 2009.
Over these years, the corps traveled extensively throughout the states, competing in many regional championships that included stops in New Jersey, North Carolina, Florida, Oklahoma, Kansas, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Wisconsin, Washington, Oregon and California. The corps also performed at the VIP Media Gala as part of the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston on July 24th.
The corps officially disbanded in 2010 although several attempts were made over the next two years to revive the unit. Through the decades, the organization touched the lives of thousands of young adults in the New England area, providing them music and performance education as well as a family of lifelong friends.
