The Hilltoppers drum and bugle corps was organized in January of 1963 and sponsored by the Livingston VFW Post 6255.
After their inaugural season of parades and exhibitions, the corps entered the field of competition, participating in the 1964 New Jersey (NJ) VFW State contest, placing 15th & competed in the World Open “Class A” preliminary round, finishing in 33rd position. The next year saw the Hilltoppers return to a 12th place finish in the 1965 NJ VFW State championships.
In 1966, a rift between management personnel and the VFW Post resulted in a break away from the Post and the formation of the Imperial Guardsmen of Livingston. However, the Hilltoppers managed to persist exclusively as a parade corps until 1969. The corps reorganized in 1970 as an “All-Girl” parade unit.
They disbanded in 1974.
