The Esquires drum and bugle corps was organized in 1960 through a merger between the Yellow Jackets of West Newton, the Youngwood Lancers & the Zundeliers of Mount Pleasant. They were
self-sponsored and affiliated with the Westmoreland County American Legion Post 982.

In their inaugural season of competition, the corps participated in both the 1960 AL & VFW “Class B” state championships, placing 2nd and 5th respectively,
finishing 2nd once again in the 1961 Legion convention before winning and defending the 1962 & 1963 titles. During the next 3 years, the Westmoreland unit, sporting a red, black, yellow and white uniform, appeared in Legion state contests, placing 3rd twice (1964 & 1966) and 4th in 1965.

In 1967, they moved up to the “Class A” division, finishing in 3rd position in the Legion state convention, returning to a 4th place finish in 1969 along with a 7th place ranking in the Red Carpet Association (RCA) circuit. The following 2 years saw the corps entertain as a parade and exhibition group before competing in the 1972 RCA championships, placing 13th in the preliminary round.

The summer of 1979 marked the return by the Esquires to field competition, a portion of which was spent marching in area parades and reorganizing their instructional staff. That year, the corps placed 17th in the DCA championship prelims and reverted back to parade alumni status over the years until 1997. The corps sponsored a contest annually as well, called “Symphony in Brass”.

They merged with the Steel City Ambassadors Alumni in 1998 to form the West Penn Alumni.
