The Cadets of New York City was formed in 2000 as a new corps for a new millennium, the result of a merger between the Cadets of Brooklyn and the Kips Bay Knight Club of the Bronx.

The corps director was George Hicks Sr. and sponsors included the Bronx Borough, President Aldolfo Carrion Jr., the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the City Parks Foundation, the Music for Youth Foundation, the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights, the New York City Safe Horizons Program and the Lion's Club of Crown Heights.  The two corps merged to preserve their performing arts programs and to continue their shared sense of mission to offer young people the highest levels of music  education and artistic expression using the vehicle of a “Division III” competitive drum and bugle corps.

In their inaugural year, the corps competed at the 2000 Garden State Open (GSO), placing 13th in the prelims, finished 16th at the DCI preliminaries and 4th at the Garden State Circuit (GSC) championships.  In 2001, the Cadets of New York City expanded their touring travels, qualifying to a 4th place finish in the GSO finals, along with 8th and 9th place rankings at the North American Open (NAO) and Canadian Open prelims respectively before finishing 10th at the 2001 DCI prelims. The season was capped with a 2nd place finish at the GSC championships.

The cornerstone of the Cadets' success was their leadership, vision and enthusiasm of Harold Wright (Operations Director), Veronica Brown (Operations Director), Jose Velazquez (Operations Director),  Al Gilford (Assistant Director) and Charles Jordan (Assistant Director).

Another busy season was in store for the NYC unit in 2003 where they once again made the GSO finals, placing 6th with stops at the preliminaries of the Canadian Open (9th), the Coast Guard Open (10th) and the NAO (17th), concluding with a 9th place finish at the DCI championships’ prelims. The following year was their most successful season, placing 3rd in the finals of both the “Division III” GSO and Jacksonville regionals, culminating with a 5th place finish at the 2003 DCI championships, a mere ½ a tenth of a point from qualifying for the finals. In 2004, the corps competed early in the season but was unable to complete the year and in 2005, they returned to full strength at the DCI “Division III” championships, placing 12th.

They disbanded in 2006.
