The Brassmen drum and bugle corps was originally formed in early 1973 by Mel Hansen, school director of the Ferndale High School Golden Eagles band.
In their inaugural season, the corps performed in exhibition at the Washington American Legion state championships but disbanded the same year. In 1978, Mel Hansen reorganized the group as a parade and exhibition corps but once again disbanded at the end of that year. In 1981, the Brassmen restarted but by the end of the 1982 season were unable to sustain activity due to organizational issues.
In the fall of 1983, under the new leadership of Tom Flanik, they reorganized and entered the field of competition, winning the 1984 Northwest Drum Corps Association (NWDCA) “Class C” championships. In April of 1985, the board of administration formed a cooperative with the Pacificaires of Surrey, fusing their membership into the Surrey group as the first International corps in North America.
After two seasons, the Brassmen regrouped and returned to field competition as members of the NWDCA circuit for one final season. They remained active within the region in their final year of activity before disbanding in 1989.
