The Buckeyes drum & bugle corps was organized in October of 1969 by Jack Mertes and assisted by Dennis Mertes and Bill Paggel. They were sponsored by the American Legion Theodore Roosevelt Post 469, the Andrew Bachleda VFW Post 2850 and by their Booster Club.

The corps was a perennial participant at the US Open “Class A” championships, competing from 1970 to 1975, excluding 1974. During that period, they placed 2nd in 1970 and finished between 13th to 28th position in the prelims every other year. In 1970, the Buckeyes were named Cleveland's Marching Ambassadors and again in 1972, Mayor Ralph Perk named April 12th as Buckeye Day, proclaiming the Buckeyes as Cleveland's Ambassadors. In 1974 and 1975, the corps also competed at the Key to the Sea Open championship preliminaries, finishing 13th and 10th respectively.

Other key members of the organization included Ray Obrzut as corps director, Chris Jelenec and Randy Quan on brass, Mike Pappas and Richard Lee on percussion, Dennis Mokaren and Ken Obrzut on visual and Kathy Richae on guard.

In early 1976, the corps merged with their archrivals, the Cleveland Caballaros to form the Buckeye State Caballaros.
