The Colt Cadets drum & bugle corps was originally formed in the fall of 1966 as the Legionnaires B corps, a feeder unit for the Legionnaires, who would eventually become the Colts. Sonia Hickson was their first director, assisted by members of the "A" corps.
By 1968, they had a membership of 80 and in the fall of that year, the corps became the Colt .45 Cadets. They initially performed in parades and standstill exhibitions for the first few years before entering the field of competition in 1971, where they competed within the Midwest area.
In 1972, the corps competed with 72 members, even after losing 40 members to the to the "A" corps. The Cadets participated in the 1973 State Legion championships in Cedar Rapids and the following year, with a membership of 70, of which 80% were in their first year, they continued to regionally. The corps changed its name to the Colt Cadets and competed at the 1976 IA state convention, placing 5th.
From 1977 to 1980, the corps competed as a member of the Cadet Corps International before going back to parade status from 1981 to 1984. In 1985, the corps re-entered limited field competition before returning as a parade corps the following season and then again to field in 1987. The Cadets attended their first DCI championships in the “Class A/60” event in 1988, placing 24th in the prelims, returning in 1989, finishing 23rd along with a 6th place finish in the finals of the DCI Midwest “A/60” championships.
From 1993 to 2004, the corps pursued its role as a feeder unit for the Colts and continued to field a competitive group as a regional participant in the DCM “Division III” circuit prelims, with finishes ranging from 7th to 11th over that period. Other highlights included “Division III” appearances at the 1995 North American Open championships, placing 19th in the prelims, a 9th place finish at the 2002 Midwest International Open, finishing 7th at the 2003 Dekalb Open and moving up to the “Division II” class in 2004, competing in the DCI Central contest where they finished in 2nd position.
The “Division II” unit began touring in 2005, traveling to the Canadian Open, placing 2nd and 4th at the Great Lakes Open. The next year saw the corps compete at the DCI Central, the Kalamazoo Open and the Great Lakes Open contests, capping the season with an 11th place finish at the 2006 DCI championship prelims, winning the coveted “Most Improved Corps” that year. The Cadet corps was crowned the 2007 DCI Indianapolis Open champions, along with returns to the Great Lakes and Kalamazoo Open contests.
In 2008, the Cadets competed in the DCI “Open Class” division, moving up from the quarterfinals (19th) to the semifinals in 2009 (14th) and became a finalist for the first time in 2010, when they placed 11th. From 2011 to 2015, the corps remained an “Open Class” finalist, finishing 12th (2011, 2012) and 10th (2013-2015). Over the next 3 seasons, they missed qualifying for the finals with 13th to 15th place finishes before a return to the finals in 2019 (11th).
The 2020 season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the Cadets returned to the field for the non-competitive 2021 season. After a 14th place finish in the 2022 prelims, the corps qualified for the finals in 2023 (9th) and 2024 (8th).
