The Excelsior drum and bugle corps was originally formed in 2004 by members from the Albany Drum Corps Initiative committee, responsible for choosing the new identity for a new Capital Region drum corps.

In April of 2004, after undergoing a multi-meeting name selection process, the name of Excelsior was near unanimously chosen... and a new corps was born. Donel Mataruga was a charter member and eventual corps director. In the first few years, the unit was a parade and exhibition corps with visions on competition in the future. In 2009, that vision became reality as Excelsior competed in the DCA “Class A” championships, placing 10^th in the preliminary round.

The corps was a perennial DCA “Class A” participant, placing as high as 5^th in the 2014 & 2016 prelims, that also included 7^th (2015), 8^th(2012), 9^th (2103), 10^th (2011) & 12^th(2010). In 2017, the Mount Ida Baptist Church, in the city of Troy, decided to close its doors and reopened them to the drum corps. As a result, the long-awaited creation of their new parent corporation, Ascension Visual and Performing Arts Association was formed. Unfortunately, the corps’ last competitive performance was in July.

They disbanded in 2018.
